Homer Research Laboratories

Built in 1961, Homer Research Laboratories was once the largest steel testing lab in the world and at one point consisted of 8 buildings on 1,000 acres. HRL conducted classified research for Bethlehem Steel in thermodynamics, metallurgy, and ceramics. The majority of the lab buildings were sold to Lehigh University in 1986, and the remaining three buildings that had 220,000 square feet of lab space and offices, remained open until 2005. The buildings were finally cleared out in 2013 and are slated to be incorporated into the campus of Lehigh University.
