Philadelphia Naval Shipyard

Updated November 2012 | By Matthew Christopher

The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard was America's first naval shipyard. The site was moved from Front Street to the current location around the time of the Civil War and remained in operation until 1995. Since then it has been a model for redevelopment and reuse under the new moniker The Navy Yard - many major companies have corporate headquarters there including Urban Outfitters, Inc., Tasty Baking Company, and GlaxoSmithKline. Because of its relatively secluded location and the fact that it used to be off-limits to the public, few people have seen this amazing location. Even though most of the structures have been restored and reused, during my visits a few vacant gems remained.
