Central Islip Tuberculosis Ward
Originally built as a part of Central Islip State Hospital (built in 1889, closed in 1996), the tuberculosis wards were largely forgotten as the state hospital itself was demolished over several years to make way for New York Institute of Technology's campus, a golf course, and a residential neighborhood. Situated uncomfortably in the middle of the three, the unique 'sunburst' buildings still contained many traces of a past that seems rather foreign in contemporary times: an era where having communicable diseases like TB could lead to imprisonment in facilities that functioned as both hospitals and prisons. The structures that made up the state hospital and tuberculosis wards have since been renovated or demolished.
