Taunton State Hospital, day room. As it was at one of the ends of the building, this ward would most likely have been one of the 'snake pits', the term used for the wards where the most violent or ill were kept. Hospitals like this one, built following Thomas Kirkbride's plan, had one main entrance in the central administration section and the thought was that the further the most ill were from it, the harder it would be for them to escape.
