By Betty Simpler: I have just looked at your photographs and read your commentary regarding Transfiguration Parish. What can I say??? It literally breaks my heart to know firsthand what a magnificent "Lady" she was and what she became. My family lived in West Phila. until 1960 and Transfiguration was our parish. My aunt (my mother's sister) was an IHM nun and taught at the school at the same time we attended. I see myself walking up the aisle of the upper church to receive my First Holy Communion and looking around in wonder at the vastness of the aisle and the beautiful stained glass. I really loved that church, but as the neighborhood started to decline, more and more families moved, and finally came the day that we did too. I very recently had an opportunity to go past the area and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that it was all gone. I have my memories, some pictures, we talk about the times we had when the family gathers. But we'll be gone one day also, along with the stories and where will be the evidence that a magnificent "Lady" once stood at the corner of 54th & Cedar Aves. Your photographs are outstanding and bittersweet. Thank you for the memories.
